Rolex Air-King 5500 Silver ADWOC Logo Dial
The Rolex Air-King released in the midst of World War II, the Rolex Air-King is the only model still in production from the original “Air Series.” Introduced in 1945, the Air-King joined the ranks of the Air-Lion, Air-Giant, and Air-Tiger, all created to honor RAF pilots who fought in the Battle of Britain. Like many Rolex models, the Air-King was designed with a particular type of wearer in mind—in this case, pilots.
Here we have an early 1980s version, reference 5500, housed in a classic and sturdy 34 mm steel case. The case and its smooth bezel are in great overall condition, but the standout feature is the very rare logo dial.
Rolex has long produced special-order “logo dial” watches for royalty, military organizations, VIPs, and select corporations. This particular example was commissioned by the Libyan company Arab Drilling & Workover Company (ADWOC). We believe the watch was gifted to an employee to mark years of service or another significant milestone in their career. The ADWOC logo is beautifully printed in red, with a drilling tower behind the lettering, set against a silver soleil-finished backdrop with crisp black printed text and the classic Air-King font.
The watch is paired with an Oyster-style bracelet, ref. 78350, with end links marked 557 and a clasp stamped H.Further more the watch is accompanied with its original hang-tag bearing the serial of the watch.
The watch and its automatic movement have been fully serviced by our watchmaker and are ready for many more years of use.
