Rolex Chronograph "Pre-Daytona" 6238 Black Knight

Rolex Chronograph "Pre-Daytona" 6238 Black Knight

Reference 6238, produced between 1962 and 1968, is often referred to as the “Pre-Daytona.” It served as the transitional model that bridged Rolex’s earlier chronographs—such as references 6034 and 6234—with what would soon become the Daytona line, officially introduced with reference 6239 in 1963. All in all, only around 2,000 to 2,500 examples of the 6238 were produced in both steel and gold over that six-year span.

The 6238 features one of the rarest dial configurations Rolex ever produced for its chronographs. Most examples appear with a silver dial, occasionally with a subtle baby blue hue, but the black dial version is particularly elusive—fewer than a few hundred are believed to exist publicly. These chronographs are distinguished by their smooth bezels, lacking the tachymeter scale found on later Daytona models, giving them a more even, almost “balanced” aesthetic.

This so-called “Black Knight” black dial 6238 is the epitome of understated elegance—pure, classic Rolex—and a true standout for collectors who know what they’re looking at. This particular dial is in fantastic condition, with lovely cream-colored lume plots, a matching handset, and a thick case featuring a beautifully smooth bezel.

The riveted Rolex Oyster bracelet is a reference 7205, with end links marked 71 and a clasp stamped 1/65. It’s in excellent condition. This fine chronograph, powered by the caliber 72B, has been fully serviced by our watchmaker.

We believe these are among the most compelling chronograph dial layouts in Rolex’s entire catalog. The black-on-black, or ton sur ton, design carries a mysterious, masculine charm that feels both timeless and quietly bold. Therefore, we think “Black Knight” is a fitting nickname for these pieces.

A 6238 is not for everyone. One could buy two hand-wound Rolex chronographs with “Daytona” on the dial in this price range—but rarity and condition make this a watch for true connoisseurs.
