Rolex Chronograph "Pre-Daytona" 6238 Silver Dial
Rolex reference 6238, produced between 1962 and 1968, is often dubbed the “Pre-Daytona.” This transitional model bridged the gap between Rolex’s earlier chronographs—like references 6034 and 6234—and what would ultimately become the iconic Daytona line-up, first launched with reference 6239 in 1963. Over its six-year production run, it's estimated that only around 2,000 to 2,500 examples were made, in both stainless steel and gold—making the 6238 a rare and significant piece in Rolex’s chronograph history.
This particular early version features a thick, well-preserved case and a clean, smooth bezel, paired with an American-made “C&I” Rolex Oyster riveted, spring-loaded bracelet, with a clasp stamped 7-58. The silver ton-sur-ton dial is in fantastic condition, with a Base 1000 outer scale, crisp black printed text, and gorgeous creamy patina on the lume— just enough contrast to make it pop. This fine “Pre-Daytona” is powered by the caliber 72B, and has been fully checked and regulated by our watchmaker.
The 6238 embodies refined simplicity—timeless, quintessential Rolex—and remains a prized gem for collectors with a sharp eye for early chronograph icons. Get in touch to discuss this über-grail for any chrono connoisseur!
