Rolex Oyster Perpetual Ovettone ref. 6098 Checkerboard Dial
The Rolex Big Bubbleback watches are known by their Italian nickname Ovettone (big egg) due to the exceptional depth of case-back, which was domed to accommodate the automatic rotor.
We love these 36mm steel watches and in fact we have a litle write up about these over here
This “big egg” features a surprisingly rare and striking dial: a repeating three-dimensional pattern with sunken applied hour markers—Arabic numerals at 3, 6, and 9, and distinctive arrow-shaped markers for the rest. The dial has aged to a beautiful crème brûlée–colored patina, giving the watch a wonderfully warm and unique presence.
The 36mm case remains in excellent, original condition, showcasing the robust monoblock design where the mid-case and bezel are crafted as a single piece. It is paired with a rare and original Rolex Joske “Hecho en Mexico” (made in Mexico by the company Joske) oval Jubilee—often nicknamed the ‘coffee bean’ Jubilee bracelet—an undeniably cool and distinctive look.
Now over 70 years old, this example has been fully serviced by our watchmaker and is ready for many more years of enjoyment.
These 1950s Ovettones are truly impressive and wear beautifully on the wrist—occupying the same revered place in the Oyster lineup as the Big Crown does in the Submariner family. Come on… reach out, and let’s make something happen!
