Rolex Submariner 5512 Gilt Four Line Underline Dial

Rolex Submariner 5512 Gilt Four Line Underline Dial

When the under is upper…

It really is Underline Sub week here at Bulang and Sons. This is probably the rarest of the bunch – a four-line 5512 with underline on the UPPER half of the dial!
The gilt dial is in great glossy condition with the hour plots and hands having taken on a lovely warm patina. The underline mark was used to signify lesser radioactivity in the luminous mixture on the hour plots, following the outlawing of Radium use. For a good while, the debate raged about what exactly the small line meant, but it is accepted that it was there to identify the safer nature of the lume mix. Read our article here.
The four lines of text in lower half comprise of two in gilt and two in silver text which is super rare to see on a watch. The pointed crown guard case remains thick in all the right places and has a black fat font insert. The hands are a nice match, but the second hand is a later (but tritium) addition.
This awesome 5512 is fitted with a C&I rivet Oyster bracelet in great condition with a clasp stamped ‘1 64’. Interestingly, the clasp also has the serial number of the watch engraved inside it. The watch has been fully serviced by our watchmaker.
